As children grow up they need to know that they are an important and valuable part of our society. How you talk to and treat your child builds a foundation for all of their interactions with the world. For a child to thrive there are a number of essential factors that every parent needs to aware of. Providing food and shelter simply isn’t enough to ensure that a child grows up to be a happy and authentic adult.

Help your child by treating them with love and respect, and being a worthy role model. Teach through example, and be generous with your expressions of love and kindness. To encourage open communication, honesty, good manners and friendliness, use the following suggestions every day.

  • Three Little Words

It’s so easy to get so caught up in a whirlwind of hectic activity that you just don’t have time to stop and say “I love you”. Children need to hear these three little words every day, so it’s important to find a way to express your love for them. A daily reminder over breakfast, or during the school run, can help to settle a child’s fears or feelings of anxiety or self-doubt.

  • Random Acts Of Kindness

Whilst it’s important to teach your child about the dangers of strangers, it is also beneficial to educate them about kindness and gratitude. Being kind to others encourages a child to develop friendships on many levels, and to experience the world in a positive way. Being grateful for all that they have, and giving thanks for this every day, is a great way for children to learn about the value of life.

  • Feelings And Emotions

Children don’t often talk about their feelings. Many children bottle feelings and emotions up inside, and in so doing create problems for later in life. Encouraging your child to share their thoughts, feelings and emotions with you is a good way to strengthen your bond. Try to avoid probing. Instead, talk about your own feelings and ask your child to share theirs with you. Discuss happy and sad feelings, and things that make you anxious or scared too.

  • Show And Tell

Encourage open communication by asking your child about their day. Ask them to tell you about new things they’ve learned today, or to show you. Be attentive, and ask questions that help to keep the conversation flowing. Even if your child would rather be off playing or doing something else, knowing that you care enough to ask how their day went will make them feel valued and loved.

  • Play Date Night

Hand over the job of decision maker for an hour or two, and let you child decide what he/she would most like to do. Let them plan the family dinner, what movie you’re going to snuggle up on the sofa to watch together, or a creative activity that’s just for fun. Trusting their choices and opinions shows your child that they matter.
