Restoration workers and people visiting a Grade I listed building in Wales have come together to share their experiences of sightings of the ‘woman in white’.

Gwrych Castle, situated in Abergele, was built between 1812 and 1822 by Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh and was later owned by its last resident, Winifred Bamford-Hesketh, over a century ago. Winifred died in 1924, however, the recent commotion made by the restoration work of the tower has been believed to stir the spirit of the ‘white woman’, leading to sightings since work began in 2014.

Speaking to Wales Online, Dr Mark Baker, chairman of Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust, said: “We started doing restoration work on the castle, particularly in the garden, and lots of strange things have been happening.

We’ve had reports of people seeing a woman dressed in white walking around the garden.”

But it isn’t just humans that are experiences sightings of the supernatural. Dogs who have visited the site with their owners have been caught off guard when coming into close range of the spirit.

Dr Baker continued: “Dogs have been acting very strangely and seem to be getting spooked at something in the gardens.

“One dog walker was walking their dog and it suddenly just bolted and jumped over a tower and it fell 50ft. Luckily, it hit some branches on the way down and was fortunate to survive.”

Not only has the castle been visited by local people and those interested in find out more, but also curious psychic and clairvoyant readers who received messages from the spirit, claiming that the countess has lots of pet dogs and that there is also a pet cemetery on site.

In an attempt to get to the bottom of the sightings, the team at Gyrych castle have called in the ghost hunters, Deadlive, to investigate.

Following on from this, Dr Baker commented: “I find it all really fascinating – if one person says it you think they’re going a bit mad but so many people have reported experiencing things that nobody seems to be able to explain logically.”
