The Summer Solstice is a time of renewal and potential. In the Northern Hemisphere the Solstice (or equinox) takes place on June 20, this year. On this day the sun’s zenith is at the furthest point from the equator, and lingers in the sky for longer than on any other day.

The Summer Solstice represents the spiritual light of consciousness and many people celebrate this annual event in symbolic ways that honour the sun. Solar celebrations often include fire rituals, flower garlands, foliage and many traditional customs that celebrate the fertility of the Earth.

During the summer months look out for the following Solstice symbols that represent renewal, vitality and an abundance of possibilities:

Element

Fire

The element of fire is a common Summer Solstice symbol and is associated with the warmth of the sun. Fire is a masculine element and is symbolic of creation, passion, rebirth, renewal, creativity, clarity and determined action. During celebrations bonfires are often lit to intensify the Solstice experience. Use fire as a symbol in your meditation practice, to encourage all of the positive aspects of the powerful sun to light up your life.

Animals

Eagles

Ancient cultures associated the majestic eagle with intense solar power. Native North American Indians believed the arrival of this bird signified that the summer rains were on their way, to nourish and hydrate their crops. The bird also symbolises strength, sturdiness and steadfast determination.

Lions

Lions mostly have strong male characteristics and are powerful creatures that represent vitality, confidence and supremacy. The lion’s magnificent mane also looks like a radiating sun.

Salamanders

Fire-belly breeds of salamanders are believed to be carriers of elemental fire. Medieval myths suggest that these creatures possessed the power to light bonfires. As salamanders are able to regenerate tails and toes they are also considered a symbol of rebirth.

Plants

Oak Trees

During the summer months oak trees stand sturdy and strong, as a defined symbol of the prime of life. These trees are commonly associated with sacred knowledge, endurance, loyalty and security. To benefit from this natural source of plant power, go hug an oak tree.

Daisies

Daisies are pretty, perky and happy summer flowers that make everyone smile. This flower symbolises the innocence of youth, and promotes friendship and laughter.

Sunflowers

Sunflowers have been associated with solar energy and power for a long time. Sunflowers have a distinctive shape that resembles the golden sun. These flowers are also naturally drawn to face the light of the solar orb, and the flower’s head will alter position to follow the rising and setting of the sun.

Setting Up A Midsummer Altar

If you plan to celebrate the Summer Solstice with a ritual that honours the sun, consider including some of these items on your altar.

  • Seasonal flowers, like sunflowers and daisies
  • Fruits and vegetables you have grown in your garden
  • Acorns
  • Candles in warm, sunny colours of yellow, gold, orange and red
